Most Anticipated "Based on a True Story" Films of 2017
While I am a lover of movies in general, I would be lying if I didn’t admit my soft spot for movies based on a true story. I am especially a sucker for any that are set in World War II, but I don’t discriminate in that way. Civil War, Vietnam, World War I… I just love a good war movie. So, while I do enjoy a good creative, fictitious work, these are the titles I think you should keep a lookout for in 2017 if you like flicks based around a true story.
Who doesn’t love a good movie about Sir Winston Churchill? This one is taking away the pressure of covering his whole life and only focusing on the 24 hours before D-Day. I personally like that they’re focusing on the tension and pressure that comes with making these tough military decisions. Also, with Brian Cox as Churchill himself and John Slattery as Dwight D. Eisenhower, I don’t see where it could really go wrong. This one won’t be a box office hit, but it currently has a release date of April 28, 2017.
4. The Lost City of Z
Surprised to see a non war picture on the list? Me too. However, for all the adventurers and explorers out there, this one should catch your eye. British explorer Percy Fawcett and his son set out to find a lost city in the Amazon in the 1920’s. Obviously, things will go wrong because it’s the Amazon. However, with Charlie Hunnam playing Fawcett and Tom Holland portraying his son, I believe this will be one more movie worth seeing. It’s set to premiere on April 21st, so we won’t have to wait too long.
3. The Zookeeper’s Wife
Once I saw the trailer for this movie, it captured my attention and led me to do my research. The Polish resistance effort during the Nazi occupation brings many incredible people to the forefront of history, which includes the people highlighted in this movie. The couple featured in this movie, Jan and Antonina Zabinski, placed themselves at risk hiding hundreds of fleeing Jews in zoo cages and even within their home. I’m sure they worried about being caught every minute of the day, which is why I think Jessica Chastain’s performance alone as Antonina will be worth the watch. March 31st will thankfully be here before we know it.
There is admittedly very little known about this picture at the moment, but we do know that Chadwick Boseman will be portraying our first African American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. It seems that the focus of the film will be on one of his earlier cases, so I’ll be excited to see where they take it. With a cast like Boseman, Josh Gad, Dan Stevens, James Cromwell, and Sterling K. Brown, though, I think we can expect great things on October 13th.
In a world of where Christopher Nolan is directing movies, I’m afraid he’ll always be in the number one spot. Seriously, this is the man who brought us Interstellar and The Dark Knight, arguably the best comic book movie ever made. Throw in the fact that Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance appear in this historical picture, and it makes it unstoppable. This is kind of a heartbreaking tale but based on the true story of World War II soldiers trying to evacuate European shores while surrounded by the German army. This movie will be appearing in theaters on July 21st, and I think it will be worth the watch.
