Top Summer Movies Breakdown
Well, back at the end of May, Jonathan and I jumped on the bandwagon of making summer movie box office predictions. For a refresher on our original predictions, you can find them here: http://bit.ly/2qn3y1o. As the summer movie season has officially closed, it seemed appropriate to reexamine our lists and see how we stacked up.
So, how did the summer box office as a whole shake out? Which movies ended up on top domestically?
1) Wonder Woman
While Wonder Woman was expected to do well, most people like us placed the female superhero’s origin film toward the bottom of the top five list. However, I think Jonathan and I have never been so happy to be wrong! Wonder Woman has grossed around $411 million domestically and scored herself as the highest grossing movie of the summer, breaking a lot of other records as well. Well done, Patty Jenkins!
2) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
The sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy was sure to be a success thanks to Director James Gunn’s killer soundtrack picking abilities and unique sense of humor. Our five favorite snarky heroes still managed to hold their own at the box office, grossing around $389 million domestically. Jonathan and I had both guessed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would be in the top five, but as usual, we had its ranking mixed up.
3) Spider-Man: Homecoming
The Sony and Marvel team-up film might not have grossed as much as we were all expecting, but to land at number three on this list is nothing to complain about. Our web-slinging hero received a refreshing new story from Watts, Daley, and Goldstein and a new look thanks to Tom Holland, and it has grossed around $330 million domestically at the box office. Spider-Man: Homecoming’s totals still have a chance to elevate slightly since it is still in its theatrical run, but regardless, we can all expect it to stay in the number three spot.
4) Despicable Me 3
This installment of the popular children’s franchise might not have been as good as the original, but it still managed to make its stake at the box office. As the family film hit of the summer, Gru and his twin brother, Dru, managed to still bring in the big bucks for Universal. Despicable Me 3 brought in around $261 million domestically, so expect to see more movies in the future featuring our favorite yellow minions.
Christopher Nolan’s latest project basically broke every top five summer movie list that existed. With such popular franchises as Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers releasing new installments, Dunkirk was no where to be expected. However, this unique story on the multiple perspectives at the Battle of Dunkirk has wowed audiences and broken records this summer. It has made $185 million domestically, but like Spider-Man: Homecoming, those totals will continue to increase a little as it finishes its theatrical run.
So, in conclusion, we correctly predicted four of the five films that would be in the top five, but we were not successful in predicting their rankings. If you listen to our box office predictions every week on our podcast, “The Shot List,” then this is not a shocking revelation.
However, how did you do? Did you correctly predict any of the top five movies of the summer? Which ones were on your list, and did you see all five of these summer hits?
