Top Ten Most Anticipated Films: 2019
As the first weekend of releases in 2019 begins, it only makes sense that we would lay out our most anticipated releases for the year. Earlier in the week we both shared our top ten (or seventeen) films for 2018, and while it’s fun to reflect on all of the movies we’ve viewed this year, it’s just as exciting to speculate about the upcoming releases for the year.
So, without further ado, here are the films we are most looking forward to in 2019:
1) Avengers: Endgame
How could this not be the movie I’m most looking forward to in 2019? The Russos have crafted some incredible stories for Marvel over the past few years, and I cannot wait to see how they wrap up all of these storylines for our favorite heroes.
Plus, I LOVE this title.
2) Star Wars: Episode 9
It’s Star Wars. It’s the end of a trilogy, and I am way too invested in the futures of Kylo Ren and Rey. Come on, December.
3) Captain Marvel
To be a property I was not very familiar with initially, I think all of the marketing for this movie is amazing. I am intrigued with the character of Carol Danvers and this unique approach to an origin story.
4) Knives Out
Rian Johnson’s latest project is set to hit theaters in November, and since I think he’s a highly talented writer-director, this has to be on my list. Plus, it’s a murder-mystery and has a killer cast, so this is a must-watch in my book.
This will be DC’s first attempt at a standalone film apart from the “DCEU” and all of the first looks seem impressive. Joaquin Phoenix can play a layered, dark character well, and I think this film has a lot of potential between Phoenix’s performance and Todd Phillips’ direction.
6) The Lion King
People might be stuck on the whole live-action/animation debate, but I think the footage for this looks incredible. The Lion King was always a favorite as a kid, and since Jon Favreau knocked The Jungle Book out of the park, I’m excited to see his exploration of this property.
7) A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
I forgot to add Won’t You Be My Neighbor? to my top ten list, but I am going to remember to add the upcoming Mr. Rogers biopic to my most anticipated list for this year. Tom Hanks is playing Mr. Rogers, and I am completely sold just by the one promotional photo of Hanks wearing a red cardigan.
8) Little Women
This is already one of my favorite novels of all time, and then they had to go attach Greta Gerwig as the director. Between her direction, the source material, and the outstanding cast that includes Saoirse Ronan and Laura Dern, I am admittedly way too excited for this one.
9) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
We have been covering casting announcements for this Tarantino film for a LONG time, and I have been intrigued by its topic for a while. I love a quirky, period piece that includes actual events, so this could potentially be a favorite for the year.
10) IT: Chapter 2
Will I even be able to handle seeing this one on the big screen? Probably not. However, IT was one of my favorite movies of 2017, and with the incredible cast that Andy Muschietti has assembled, I cannot help but be pretty excited about this second installment.
Be impressed. I can’t think of a time when a horror film EVER appeared on my most anticipated list.
1) Star Wars: Episode 9
I mean, it’s Star Wars, so of course it’s my most anticipated film of the year. It’s also the last time we will see Carrie Fisher on screen, so I’m ready for that special moment.
2) Avengers: Endgame
Poised to be the box office giant of 2019, the follow up to Avengers: Infinity War will resolve some storylines (hopefully) of our heroes in the aftermath of Thanos. It should be a wild MCU ride to say the least.
3) The Lion King
The animated classic is one of Disney’s best classic films and bringing back James Earl Jones to join a new voice cast was the second best decision made. The first was bringing in Jon Favreau to direct this new adaptation.
4) Captain Marvel
Marvel is about to have a new leader going forward, and I’m very excited to see Brie take on this role, and more than anything I’m ready to see this badass superhero on screen.
5) IT: Chapter 2
Much to my surprise as someone that is not exactly cool with clowns, one of my favorite films of 2017 was IT. A new adult cast should only add to the excellent part one.
6) Knives Out
Rian Johnson has assembled one of the best casts in recent years, so count me intrigued with this thriller.
I think Jordan Peele is becoming one of my favorite filmmakers as both a director and a producer. The Us trailer was very disturbing and intriguing, much like IT, so I’m ready to check it out.
8) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino has assembled a great cast for his 9th film, and that time period of Hollywood is one of my favorite eras of film history.
9) Godzilla: King of Monsters
I enjoyed Garreth Edwards’ Godzilla, but this film looks to take the franchise in a much more epic direction. Bringing out the catalog of Godzilla’s villains, the trailer blew me away, so we will cross our fingers until this summer.
I’m a huge fan of Guy Richie and the animated version of Aladdin, so I’m cautiously optimistic about this new live-action film.
So, are you looking forward to any of these films in 2019? What other films would you include? Comment and let us know!
