Well, with reflections on the film landscape of 2017 now complete, it’s time to look toward the new releases that will be coming our way in 2018. There are plenty of big tent pole films to anxiously await like Avengers: Infinity War, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Aquaman, but there are plenty more beyond that. With all the new releases coming over the next twelve months, I’m sure that 2018 will be another profitable year.

So, without further ado, here are Mollie and Jonathan’s lists for their most anticipated releases of 2018.

Jonathan’s List:

1) Avengers: Infinity War

This film is the result of 10 years of Marvel films, so yeah, I’m a little excited. The promise of a Thanos movie is also a first for the MCU with the main focus on the villain.

2) Black Panther

I loved Chadwick’s portrayal of this character in Captain America: Civil War and can’t wait to see this powerhouse cast and incredible imagery hit the big screen in a few weeks.

3) Solo: A Star Wars Story

I’m still not sure I need a Han Solo film, but this is Lawrence Kasdan’s script, and it's Star Wars, so I’ll be there opening night.

4) Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Harry Potter is one of my favorite fandoms, and I really enjoyed the first outing in the Fantastic Beasts world. Also, I’m extremely excited to see Jude Law’s Dumbledore join the mix. Is it November yet?

5) Annihilation

Alex Garland’s film, Ex Machina, was my top film of 2015, and I’m very excited to see what he does with Annihilation. Plus, Oscar Isaac only adds to the exciting possibilities.

6) The Incredibles 2

It’s taken far too long for Pixar to make this film, but after seeing Coco, I’m hoping this is just as amazing.

7) The Shape of Water

I know this technically came out in 2017, but it hasn’t hit our area yet, and I’m still very excited to see it.

8) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

I’ll admit that Jurassic World doesn’t have the same rewatchability as the original, but I’m curious to see what Bayona does with the sequel, and I’m happy to see more animatronics.

9) Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man was a very surprising film when it came out, outdoing Ultron for me that year, and I can’t wait to see where they go next. Plus, the addition of Michelle Pfeiffer is an inspired choice.

10) Mary Poppins Returns

Two words: Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda.  Let’s see if Rob Marshall can once again knock this one out of the park.

Mollie’s List:

1) Avengers: Infinity War

Between the trailer and the tidbits of information we’ve received from various comic cons, this is the film I’m clamoring to see. I’m hoping that Thanos will be the villain we’ve all been waiting for from the MCU, and I cannot wait to see how the Russo brothers weave all of these heroes into one tale.

2) Black Panther

Speaking of Avengers heroes, I am beyond excited for T’Challa’s solo film debut. He was one of the highlights of Captain America: Civil War, and I’m excited to see his personal journey in establishing himself as king of Wakanda. Also, these trailers have been incredible.

3) Solo: A Star Wars Story

While I have never been one of those people calling for a Han Solo movie, I have gradually become more excited about this one. Between all the casting announcements for this one, I’m excited to see what Ron Howard has put together.

4) Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

2018 is quickly becoming the year for some of my favorite franchises, and that includes this Harry Potter flick. Jude Law’s introduction as a Young Dumbledore and the return of Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander is sure to culminate into one heck of an adventure.

5) Mary Poppins Returns

I love the original Mary Poppins, and I still cannot believe that we are finally getting another one. The true selling point, though, has been the casting of Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

6) Annihilation

Sometimes I get more excited about the director of a movie than all the other aspects of the film, and this is one of those cases. I think the trailer looks amazing, but I’m mostly just excited to see another movie from Alex Garland, who directed the immensely thought-provoking sci-fi film, Ex Machina.

7) The Incredibles 2

This is that sequel that we’ve all been wanting for fourteen years, so it has to be included in my top ten list for 2018. I cannot wait to see the shenanigans that the Parr family will find themselves in, especially with Jack Jack’s powers now in play.

8) Sicario 2: Soldado

This is another one of those movies where the director sold me on a project long before a trailer was released. Taylor Sheridan is one of my favorite storytellers in the business at this point, and I cannot wait to see what he brings to this sequel of Sicario.

9) First Man

Staying on the director train, First Man makes the list since Damien Chazelle is in the director’s chair. I’m also incredibly interested in a biopic about Neil Armstrong, so really, it’s a win-win for me.

10) A Wrinkle in Time

The first trailer for this film was pretty much my favorite trailer of 2017, and I cannot wait to see what Ava DuVernay does with this material. The casting of Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah Winfrey only deepens my intrigue for this science fantasy tale.
